Review: Are You Terrified Yet?

Image
Book information Title: Are You Terrified Yet? Author: R. L. Stine Where to buy:  Amazon Summary of my review: Not a typical horror book (features psychological horror). Main character has a great development throughout the book. Amy was demanding and selfish. Viscous circle.  Another book I liked a bit more than the rest of the series. I love that it's not the typical horror story one would read and that even R.L. Stine experimented with the subgenre psychological horror. I really like those. So when I read this book I was hooked from the start. And the ending had so many plot twists! Very fun and tense read. There might not be a monster, but there will be a hero.  The only thing I didn't like was how Amy was always talking for Craig and always made decisions for him. Craig also complainted about this and I can't but agree. She was so selfish and always said 'that's not scary', 'he can do MORE'. Especially the 'more' part. She just put him deepe...

Review: Five Feet Apart

Image
Book information Title: Five Feet Apart Author: Rachael Lippincott, Mikki Daughtry, Tobias Iaconsis Where to buy:  Amazon Emotional, not only about diseases (other types of problems), great character development, heart-wrenching, correct information about the diseases, weird wording, sometimes unrealistic, sometimes a bit slow Likes: Medium paced book. Gets excited around 60 pages in.  A lot of character development (Will) and backstories of characters making them more relatable and connected.  Reference: Chapter 1, 'feel anxious, restless even. Because instead of just wanting to get healthy, I need to get healthy. For my parents’ sake.' Reference 2: Chapter 1, 'Multicolored patches are sewn over spots where he ripped open, his stuffing pouring out when I squeezed too hard during the most painful of my treatments.' The characters all have their own unique quirk like Stella needing to be in control of everything or Will trying to have freedom no matter what and might sho...

The Lamplighter is out now!

Image
Book information Title: The Lamplighter Author: Crystal J. Bell Where to buy:  Amazon ,  Barnes and Noble ,  Bookshop.org . It’s an honour to bring light to the dark. The nineteenth-century whaling village of Warbler is famous for its lucky ship figureheads—and infamous for people disappearing into the nightly fog. In this murky locale, the lamplighter is synonymous with safety and protection, and it’s a position Temperance assumes when her father is found hanging from one of the lampposts. Though Tempe proves competent, the town is still hesitant to let a woman handle this responsibility. When a girl disappears after two lamps go out, Tempe’s ability to provide for her mother and younger sister hangs in the balance. She scrambles for answers, hindered at every turn by the village authorities’ call for her removal. As more villagers vanish under her watch, Tempe discovers unsettling truths about the famous Warbler figureheads and her own beloved father. But her warnings o...

Review: The Lost Sisters

Image
Book information Title: The Lost Sisters Author: Holly Black Where to buy:  Amazon The story of this short book and spin-off is about Taryn and Locke, their relationship and the parts we readers were left unknown.  Summary: Once upon a time, there was a girl named Taryn and she had a faerie lover who came to her at night. He was generous and adoring, but visited only in the dark. He asked for two things: one, for her to keep their meetings secret, and two, never to look upon his face fully. And so, night after night she took delight in him but, after some time had passed, wondered what his secret could be.… We get to know Taryn better and her character and personality. Also, her relationships, for instance with Jude and how she perceives her. It is important to read to understand the story and the previous book better, specially when we get to know in this book and not the other why Taryn started crying. We get to know what Cardan said to Taryn to make her cry. And we didn't g...

Review: Suicide Boy

Image
Book information Title: Suicide Boy Vol. 1 Author: ParkGee Where to buy:  Kyobook Likes:  Relatable, somehow. I don't plan to do suicide or self-harm but his moments of sadness I can relate to, like hiding somewhere, so that one can be completely alone, etc.  The ending was great. I actually initially hoped for him to do it, but that it ended differently was beautiful in it's own way. Dislikes:  It always starts with hello I am, (insert name, insert age) it's annoying. And too stereotypical.  It's always just bad, bad, bad. There is that tenant boy who is nice to him and a school mate who saw him cutting on the toilet and removed every sharp object from Hooni secretly. But I can't understand how the teachers NEVER intervene. They literally see that he is shirtless and act like it's normal and believe what OTHERS say instead of asking Hooni himself. It's so unrealistic that the teachers NEVER noticed that Hooni gets bullied. It might has been more realistic t...

Review: Morgana and Oz Volume 1

Image
Book information Title: Morgana and Oz (Volume 1) Author: Miyuli Where to buy:  Amazon . *I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.* Likes: Drawings. The drawings are different in this book from other manhwa and manga. The colours are more flat and one might say there was less effort put into, but I really like this unique art style. It doesn't always have to shine and look perfect, colours can be flat. And it gives the impression of a cartoon. It also gives a cozy feeling. I must say I am a fan of the drawing style. It starts off right at the beginning with something interesting; The meeting of the vampires and witches. It already makes a reader excited to read more, especially when the two main characters met. Oz got turned into a cat. That's funny. And cool. I like cats. And it gives the story its little extra. Comedy in this book is actually funny. I try to restrain from comedy books, but this one has met right my taste. I like t...

Review: The Six Deaths Of The Saint

Image
Book information Title: The Six Deaths Of The Saint Author: Alix E. Harrow Where to buy:  Amazon . This review includes spoilers, read at your own risk. “Well, she is my Devil now.” In a thousand years and a thousand after that, they will still sing of the Prince and his Devil. Your body fighting battles you’d already won or hadn’t yet fought. “My Devil,” he said, and there was nothing you would not do for him when he spoke in this voice: fond, fatherly, full of love. You understood, finally, that there had never truly been a she or a you but only a terrible, lonely I. “I would rather love a coward than mourn a legend.” I wanted so badly to be beloved. But only one person in all my lives has ever loved me, and he does not wear a crown. Likes: Tragic past of the main character makes them more human than anyone in the story thought she was. Also, the little detail with the red hair and the century (witches) was awesome. Everyone thought she was a devil 'cause of her red hair (and her...

Review: I Am Special Too!

Image
Book information Title: I Am Special Too! Author: Anna Tomàs Where to buy:  Amazon . *I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.* Illustrations were all really cute, just like the cover! The message behind this book is to be your special self and to be always you and no one else. Throughout the book the bunny asks others why they think they are special and at the end of the book she finds out herself how special the bunny is. Important message behind this book, cute illustrations and fitting ryhmes.  Only thing I didn't like is how the bunny mum said to her child 'pet', as if it's not her child but her possession. Also the words were all friendly until at the end the word 'coward' showed up. I am not sure if that's a good idea to teach children such a word. That's how young children usually bully other children, by calling them a coward. And if a child should feel special, they shouldn't hear it or learn it....
