Review: The Lost Sisters

Book information

Title: The Lost Sisters

Author: Holly Black

Where to buy: Amazon
The story of this short book and spin-off is about Taryn and Locke, their relationship and the parts we readers were left unknown.

Summary: Once upon a time, there was a girl named Taryn and she had a faerie lover who came to her at night. He was generous and adoring, but visited only in the dark. He asked for two things: one, for her to keep their meetings secret, and two, never to look upon his face fully. And so, night after night she took delight in him but, after some time had passed, wondered what his secret could be.…
We get to know Taryn better and her character and personality. Also, her relationships, for instance with Jude and how she perceives her. It is important to read to understand the story and the previous book better, specially when we get to know in this book and not the other why Taryn started crying. We get to know what Cardan said to Taryn to make her cry. And we didn't get to know that in the previous book and perhaps also not in the next one (didn't read it yet), so there is definitely a essential part about wanting and perhaps 'needing' to read this book.

As it is a spin-off and still mentions the parts that already happened and just in a different perspective it is complicated to say if everything mentioned there and the book itself is necessary. If you want to know what Cardan said to make Taryn cry then this book is for you; if not, you might not need it unless you want to understand Taryn more. As I myself, started to dislike her ONLY 'cause I read this book.
(Reasoning, the scene: What Locke had done—even if it was awful to you, it was a grand gesture. It meant he cared for me. And now Nicasia and Prince Cardan had had their fun and humiliated you. Now, maybe if you didn’t provoke them further, they would stop.)

I loved that the first book already mentioned Alice In Wonderland and was fascinated by it. Huge Alice In Wonderland fan and almost get me always to read a fanwork of it. So when this book was focusing on fairy tales and even mentioned some like the pea princess I was lured in. The writing style was different this time than the previous book and it felt like a new author, but rather it was a new protagonist, and it was perfectly done. Each character has their own 'voice' and this book didn't forgot about it. It's beautiful.
How it works: Only everything that is lower than 9 gets reduced from the final rating. Depending on how strong it inflicted the overall enjoyment of reading it effects differently.

3/5
For me it was important, but not a special book as it was just from another perspective told. Average book, but was necessary for me.
