Review: If We Were Villains

Image
Book information Title: If We Were Villains Author: M.L. Rio Where to buy:  Amazon ,  Barnes & Noble ,  Bookshop.org First of all we have plays, mention of poetry and of course acting.  Personally, the touch of a play while reading was really cool. We get dialogue only, acts and more. The last play I read was really fun so seeing one now again makes me remember that I didn't read them in a while.  The acting was relatable as I am or rather was an actor myself. That's also the reason I wanted to read this book. Not 'cause of the Shakespeare and other historical stuff but the acting.  Some parts were actually crazy/interesting to read about as the book didn't really had the 'it was boring/too slow' problem. Some examples: Scene I Act IX was so crazy. Like it felt like real betrayal but also not. And what did James even imagine? What was that aaaah.  The II. Act was so sad. Especially scene II, I feel so bad for James. I also think that Oliver has som...

Review: We Were Liars

Image
Book information Title: We Were Liars Author: E. Lockhart Where to buy:  Amazon ,  Barnes & Noble ,  Bookshop.org When I saw that the book has 87 chapters I was like: What But guess who's happy now for getting short chapters to read :D Writing style was, well, interesting. I mean sometimes it was out of place and I was confused or preferred if it wasn't written down some parts, but some of them were really cool. Especially the beginning of the book. The eerie feeling was great! The original hand drawn things, poems, and 'how I wrote We Were Liars' were really cool. Most authors don't include this, even though I think it's good to see the progress of a story for people who might plan to write their first one themselves.  (Also kinda glad the name 'Let's do and say we didn't' was changed to 'we were liars') Despite everything I still liked the story. The plot. What happened. It didn't turn out like I hoped for, but it was still inte...

Review: The Naturals

Image
Book information Title: The Naturals Author: Jennifer Lynn Barnes Where to buy:  Amazon ,  Barnes & Noble ,  Bookshop.org ‘When you changed one assumption, you changed everything.’ - Cassie There is foreshadowing of plot twists but very very subtle. You have to read between the lines to actually get them before the plot twist reveal. Which I looove. I hate books that are so obvious with their plot twists, I mean the last foreshadowing of Lia for the first plot twist kinda got me, but it was good nevertheless! And really you have to think. It's not like the typical story you read on autopilot and still get the plot twist 'cause it was way too obvious. These plot twists are fresh! The last plot twist was so crazy. It was like a double plot twist. And the first one I got it, but the second one? I was close but couldn't decide between two characters but they were alike so guess I theoretically also solved this one before we got the plot twist? But seriously this book dese...

Review: The Memory Police

Image
Book information Title: The Memory Police Author: Yoko Ogawa Where to buy:  Amazon ,  Barnes & Noble ,  Bookshop.org ‘And no matter how wonderful the memory, it vanishes if you leave it alone, if no one pays attention to it. They leave no trace, no evidence that they ever existed.’ - R Alright it would be a lie to say that either this book or the one I previously read didn't put me into a reading slump. Mainly 'cause both were slow-paced and I really can't stand slow-paced books unless I'm really really interested or investigated into the story and don't mind if it's more detailed and slower. But that rarely the case and this book didn't even have a plot, it had more vibes than anything as the characters were quite flat too.  The book was more based on meaning than anything else. So if you don't understand the meaning this book might be boring. I did understand it, but as I said the slow-pacing got on my nerves. Especially as I already understood the...

Review: If You Could See The Sun

Image
Book information Title: If You Could See The Sun Author: Ann Liang Where to buy:  Amazon ,  Barnes and Noble ‘To live well, you must live unseen. To live well, you must learn to see yourself first.’ - Mr. Chen That is mainly what the book is about. A girl who isn't that rich, or rather not rich at all, until she got a scholarship for a school for rich kids and she needs to fulfil very hard and complicated exams, so that her grades don't drop. I usually don't add any synopsis of any book, but I think it's necessary to understand what I'm about to write next. You see the book covers the themes of school stress, exam stress and also the pressure of wanting to be perfect. To be liked by others. To be SEEN. And well, our Sun Yan has the perfect condition as she turns invisible. Very much to her liking (not). Honestly, that might sound biased but I mainly liked the book due to me being able to relate to things. It made me feel understood and I just couldn't but nod al...

Review: Haiku

Image
Book information Title: Haiku: Classic Japanese Short Poems Author: Matsuo Basho, Yosa Buson, Kobayashi Issa, Masaoka Shiki with Hart Larrabee (Translator) Where to buy:  Amazon *I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.* I'm so glad that I read this one! First of all, the Haiku were all really stunning and I'm surprised to see how I liked at least one from all the authors that were showcasted. Yes, we don't only get Japanese poems by one author, but many more and even in a perfect order! Not only that, we also get before starting into the Haiku collection, a explanation was a Haiku is, a bit of backstory and also remarks as to how it got translated into English.  The layout of each page might stayed the same, but it was good, as we got the authors name and how long they lived at the top, on the right side the original Haiku and on the left the translation and also transliteration which was very cool and interesting to read too. I...

Review: If Cats Disappeared From The World

Image
Book information Title: If Cats Disappeared From The World Author: Genki Kawamura Where to buy:  Amazon ,  Barnes & Noble ,  Bookshop.org Summary of my review: Emotional and very sad read. Heavy character development and no flat characters, all heavily described and their pasts told. Relatable and thought-provoking moments and questions. Due to the thought-provoking questions the read felt a bit philosophical (but not a lot). Odd conversations (lack of emotions when protagonist tells his diagnosis or when he sees the devil and doesn't act surprised). Some things that didn't make sense like the devil saying he watches the main character, but doesn't seem to find him if he searches for him. Also a letter is given way to late, the character that gave the letter knew the diagonis of the protagonist and still gave it way later in the story. What if the main character already died at that time? Before you read this book I must warn you: It's emotional and the title isn...

Review: Before The Coffee Gets Cold

Image
Book information Title: Before The Coffee Gets Cold Author: Toshikazu Kawaguchi Where to buy:  Amazon ,  Barnes & Noble  &  Bookshop.org Finally I read it too!  Let's start of with the things I liked; Firstly, it was touching. Didn't cry but I understood it and could sympathise. Secondly, we get more than just one story and out of different perspectives. My favourite was the 2nd story. As I couldn't imagine for my love to forget me due to alzheimer. It's heart-wrenching! Thirdly, the rules for the cafĂ© and how it works was so interesting to know of and gave the story a bit more action. The story and rules are also so unique and creative. Don't think I will find it in another book. Fourthly, the reactions of the characters were valid and reasonable. There wasn't a moment where something unusual happened and a customer acted completely normal even though they never saw/experienced it before. Also, when a character was naive or in general made a stupid deci...
