Review: Miss Miyazen Would Love to Get Closer to You 1

Image
Book information Title: Miss Miyazen Would Love to Get Closer to You 1 Author: Akitaka Where to buy:  Kodansha  &  Amazon . *I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.* Likes: The table of content looked really nice. It was also good organised, so one could read easily where the next chapter will be and so on. The characters are relatable as they are all-time nervous and can't thing that one actually has the same interest as the other. The drawings are all beautiful, specially the ones who cover the whole page. The blush is on point, the eyes have so much expression and the hands all look perfect. Dislikes: Slow pacing + no originality. It was more character driven the story than plot driven, but even with that it was kinda slow. If I consider the whole book from the beginning to the end it would be an average book that everyone already knows of as there wasn't anything special that let this book stand out. The ending. It w...

Review: I Can't Say No to the Lonely Girl 1

Image
Book information Title: I Can't Say No to the Lonely Girl 1 Author: Kashikaze Where to buy:  Amazon  &  Penguin Random House . *I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.* Likes:  Cover. It might be one of the most standards covers I saw, as almost every Yuri cover has this kind of cover, but it doesn't change the fact that it lured me into interest of reading this. Drawings. The art is really nice. Especially as I noticed that the hair has a white outline, than the rest of the body parts, giving its certain highlight (only in the colour drawings). The eyes just seemed a bit uncanny on some pages at the start, but later on I didn't find this anymore, while reading. As an example for the uncanny part is page 27, last panel, her mouth isn't connected to her head, making it look a bit creepy. I understand that it doesn't need to always have a line for every single space, but this one is a bit too big and noticeable and it ...

Review: My Cat Can’t Tell Time (But I Can)

Image
Book information Title: My Cat Can’t Tell Time (But I Can) Author: Rebecca J. Allen Where to buy: North Star Editions  &  Amazon . *I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.* I like that it has an illustration on every page and that it teaches children to read the clock by also showing throughout the book the analog clock and not just the digital one. The cover is really cute and I love the concept of the cat waking the girl up too early, it reminds me of my own cat. At the end of the book one gets questions to figure out if they understood the lesson or not. Really nice book! I would definitely recommend it to young children! Edit, 28. April 2024: I just noticed by reading other reviews that the girl never mentioned the time in the text itself. Since I can read both clocks digital and analog I didn't notice. But I think it really is important to tell the kids what is being seen so they understand.  4/5 I thank Netgalley, No...

Review: The Lamplighter

Image
Book information Title: The Lamplighter Author: Crystal J. Bell Where to buy:  Amazon . Around Pru, it's easy to forget the shadows in the world. She is my sun. - Tempe I have fallen in love with the man, not his looks. - Pru Never stop shining. For you are the sun. - Tempe *I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.* Likes: First sentence is already exciting, making a reader want to read more. Nice writing style. No words are too often used, great variety. Feelings are describes in literal and metaphorical way, giving a great variety as well. Temperance, our main character has a rare British name. It's not the usual names one hears in books, at least not for the main character. It's gives the story it's certain originality. It addresses the difficulty one has when they wear trousers as a girl in old times. I see that the author made some research, and that's good! The ending wasn't predictable. Dislikes: Pacing. ...

Review: Peter Pan (1910)

Image
Book information Title: Peter Pan Author: J.M. Barrie Where to buy:  Amazon  &  AbeBooks . This review includes spoilers, read at your own risk. 'All children, except one, grow up.' 'Wendy, one girl is more use than twenty boys.' 'To die will be an awfully big adventure.' 'Boy... Why are you crying?' Likes:  Writing style. The old-fashioned way of writing. I am aware that it's a book from 1911, so in the times back then it was normal, but nowadays it's art to write like this. Rhymes. I am not sure if that was done on purpose or not, as it happened without any notice beforehand and ended so fast again, but it was really beautiful.  Originality. That book is the only original Peter Pan as we know and it has more than enough original story elements to call this original.  Personality. Characters aren't flat. Peter the cocky boy, Wendy the adventurous girl, Mr. Darling who dislikes Nanny and has sometimes a temper and so many more.  Film vs B...

Review: A Kingdom of Quartz 1

Image
Book information Title: A Kingdom of Quartz 1 Author: Bomhat Where to buy:  Amazon  &  Kodansha . *I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.* Cover: Sooo good. I scroll quite fast most of the time and this made me stop. It really catched my eyes! Drawings: I think it's quite lovely drawn. As always it's black-white as it's a manga, but the drawing style is really good. Especially the prince of Quartz. He looks so good!  Nice drawings. Almost every third page has a big drawing and I personally like them a lot. The hair was also drawn really well from each character. The feathers are drawn with so much detail. And there are sometimes small stars around the drawings, I think that's cute.  Get to know the main character Blue quite fast. We get an insight of the life of Blue and how she has a hard time interacting with other's based on her wings. I can relate to her on many ways and I think showing her insecurities is a...

Review: Episodes of Violence

Image
Book information Title: Episodes of Violence Author: David Bernstein Where to buy:  Amazon . *I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.* Likes:  The cover is gorgeous, beautiful, gives me saw vibes (a horror film I am fond of). It talks about how people lie when they say they pity someone and never actually make a chance themselves for a better world (donation, etc.). I really liked that as it's for most true and that it got mentioned is really important. Different perspectives from the characters and their view of the world. This already happens at the start of the story, no character is the 'main' or most important one, they all fulfil eachother and the story. Talking about sexual abuse and how it affects someone and how most of the time no one believes someone. Also liked how Amber didn't keep quiet and tried to get her rightful justice. Different POV's each chapter. As a reader you can get an insight of each characte...

Review: Night Stories: Folktales from Latin America

Image
Book information Title: Night Stories: Folktales from Latin America Author: Liniers Where to buy: Amazon  &  Penguin Random House . *I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.* Likes:  The stories were all really cool and the ending always had a twist. Also, the information to the stories at the end and at the beginning of the book were quite resourceful and helpful. I understand that it's a children's book and therefore praise that every single page had a drawing, even the table of content! Dislikes: I wished it would just have a bit more to it, more stories and such. It was quite short and I would liked to have read more. How it works: Only everything that is lower than 9 gets reduced from the final rating. Depending on how strong it inflicted the overall enjoyment of reading it effects differently.  [ Story 8 / 10 ] - [ Characters 10 / 10 ] + [ Triggering 0 / 10 ] + [ Topic/Genre 0 / 10 ] + [ Writing style 10 / 10 ] +...
